Lovers of Cuban art celebrate the latest at the Lowe
Cuban-art lovers recently enjoyed a reception kicking off the latest exhibition at the University of Miami Lowe Art Museum: Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection.
On display through April 4, the exhibition’s more than 50 works highlight the cultural mixing and diverse styles that reflect international contemporary art as well as characterize Cuba itself.
Forty Cuban-born artists, who live in and outside of Cuba, use subtle devices of irony, metaphor and ambiguity to challenge accepted artistic and political discourse, while employing a rich variety of experimental, conceptual and postmodern strategies.
The exhibition includes large-scale paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs and mixed media works, many not seen previously outside Cuba. The pieces in the exhibition were selected from a more extensive collection of Cuban art assembled by Howard and Patricia Farber of New York and Miami Beach.
The Lowe Art Museum, 1301 Stanford Dr., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Closed Monday. Admission is $10; $5 for seniors and non-UM students. For more information visit www.lowemuseum.org.
