A most interesting lecturer spoke at the University of Miami Women’s Guild Luncheon on March 1. Held at Hurricane 100 Room of the University of Miami’s BankUnited Center, Dr. Roni Avissar, Dean of the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, was introduced by UM Women’s Guild President Margaret Steele.

Dr. Avissar informed the large crowd of members and guests that the Rosenstiel School section of the University of Miami was founded in the 1940s and has grown into one of the world’s premier marine and atmospheric research institutions. This department is dedicated to helping communities to better understand about the planet, participating in the establishment of environmental policies and aiding in the improvement of society and quality of life.

Born and raised in France, Dr. Avissar was with Duke University before joining the University of Miami on June 1, 2009. He has been bringing innovation to the Rosenstiel School’s programs and helped increase the department’s external funding from less than $1 million to more than $4.2 million, led a strategic planning process, increased the number of female faculty members and revamped the doctoral program.

Ladies had the opportunity to visit with all the members and enjoy the delicious luncheon before Dr. Avissar began his speech. The number of various projects of his department both fascinated and amazed the attentive audience. Everyone enjoyed him greatly because he not only informed everyone about the outstanding programs at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science but also provided numerous laughs during his presentation. A most delightful guest!
