How is Gables Home Page different from other websites?

Gables Home Page is a nonprofit, online publication that provides a free flow of information to the community at large in a respectful and dignified setting. Residents, young and old, and those who work or are active in Coral Gables are invited to be a part of the dialogue. The free flow of information is a core need of communities today inextricably linked to their future growth and development.

What are the initial sources of funding for the project?

Gables Home Page was funded in its first three years by grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which were matched by  grants (cash and in-kind) from the Coral Gables Community Foundation. Coral Gables was one of 21 communities nationwide chosen for this prestigious “Community Information Challenge” grant award program in 2008.

How will the project sustain itself long term?

Gables Home Page is sustaining itself long term through advertising, sponsorships, underwriting and sponsored content opportunities. Initially, there was no subscription fee; readers may be asked to contribute to Gables Home Page on a voluntary basis at a later date.

What about political advertising?

In 2011 and 2013, Gables Home Page offered paid political advertising to candidates in the city’s biennial elections. Each candidate, upon filing his/her candidacy statement, was invited to submit a bio and photo for publication (at no cost) in our Meet the Candidates section and was made aware of advertising opportunities. Advertising positions are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Negative or attack ads are not accepted in keeping with our mission to provide information in a respectful and dignified setting online. It is the discretion of the publisher and the Editorial Advisory Board to determine acceptability of advertising content on the site.

What audiences does Gables Home Page target?

All ages, young and old, are encouraged to participate.

Are other partners are involved?

Gables Home Page is joint venture with the University of Miami School of Communication on content, training and marketing, and The Miami Herald on content and advertising opportunities.

How often is the site updated?

Gables Home Page is updated five to six days per week with new stories, photos or upcoming events. From February 2012 to March 2013, more than 100 new posts, specific to Coral Gables, were published every month — 1,250 separate items in all — more than any other publication claiming to cover Coral Gables.

Who can contribute?

Anyone may contribute to the content of the site.

Who is in charge of determining the rules of conduct and ethical standards that Gables Home Page and its users will abide by?

An Editorial Advisory Board consisting of community leaders and journalists has been formed. This group helped develop the rules of conduct for bloggers, contributors, users and commenters to follow.

Who writes content for Gables Home Page?

Content is written and compiled by Gables Home Page staff, University of Miami School of Communication students, citizen journalists and guest contributors. Public and private schools also submit press releases for publication, as do community nonprofits such as Actors’ Playhouse, the Coral Gables Chamber, Coral Gables Museum and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, among others.

What type of content can be found at Gables Home Page?

Several categories are covered — education, people, culture, social, government, dining, sports and elections (during municipal election cycles) — plus a comprehensive calendar of upcoming events.

When did Gables Home Page launch?

Gables Home Page was unveiled October 23, 2009 at the annual fundraising gala of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. The site went online (beta testing) in late August 2009.

What kind of advertising opportunities are available?
