The recent buzz at Burger Bob’s was all about birthday boys Robert Fewell and Hank Langston.

Mr. Fewell is noted for his considerable philanthropy in Coral Gables. And Mr. Langston, a former chair of the Coral Gables Community Foundation, is dean of faculty and director of university, corporate and community affairs at Gulliver Schools.

“When Bob Fewell turned 90 we threw him a big party that included violins, which he liked very much. As his 91st approached he asked if he would have them again. I explained that you only got strings on big birthdays such as your 90th or 95th,” explained Lynn Bauer, who co-hosted the party with fellow Burger Bob’s regular Hal Wanless.

“To his surprise and pleasure we hired a harpist to celebrate the occasion of Bob’s 91st birthday. He is one of our very favorite people and it meant so much to him to have Mayor (Jim) Cason and so many of his friends attend!” Mrs. Bauer continued.

Burger Bob (Bob McGuire) and restaurant manager Rita Tennyson took part in the Feb. 21 festivities, which included lunch and, of course, birthday cake for Mr. Fewell, whose wife Marian enjoyed the celebration at his side.

Gifts included a DVD from longtime friend Dick Renick of their trip years ago to Russia, where they had an audience with leader Nikita Khrushchev. Mr. Fewell also received a music CD from Mayor Cason and an item from the Coral Gables Museum presented by museum Director Chris Rupp.  As a car lover, Mr. Fewell received a Hemmings Motor News magazine subscription from from Bill Bonn and Andria Hanley of the Coral Gables Community Foundation.

Additional guests included Gloria Burns, former Mayor George Corrigan, Stanley Davidson, Felix Escoto and daughter Mia, Judy Pruitt, Wayne Rafter, Laura Russo, Jeannett Slesnick, Jack Thomson and Lydia and Kary, who work with the Fewells.

“Thank goodness we have people like Bob and Marian Fewell who care so deeply for their hometown,” Mrs. Slesnick said.

Adjacent to the Granada Golf Course clubhouse, Burger Bob’s was established in 1993 and has become known for its hearty breakfasts, chili made from scratch, and, you guessed it — hamburgers!
