Chamber sets candidate forum; residents may submit questions
The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its biennial candidate forum for Tuesday, March 26, at the University of Miami Fieldhouse, 1245 Dauer Dr., beginning at 6 p.m.
Both mayoral candidates, incumbent Jim Cason and City Commissioner Ralph Cabrera, have confirmed their participation, as have six of the eight commission candidates, chamber officials said.
“The chamber is delighted to once again be the one venue where all of the candidates can share their views and ideas, especially those that will directly impact our local business community,” said Mark Trowbridge, president and CEO of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.
“While we do not endorse candidates, we are very proud of this tradition and we will continue to be the candidate forum of choice for the Coral Gables community, providing a unique opportunity for a diverse cross-section of residents, business owners and community leaders to come together to learn more about each candidate before they decide who they will support,” Mr. Trowbridge said.
Coral Gables voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, April 9, to decide three races — mayor and two commissioners. Ten candidates have filed to run; the official qualifying period is Feb. 18-22, and voter registration deadline is March 9.
So far the candidates have generated slightly over $334,000 in campaign donations and loans. The mayor serves a two-year term at an annual salary of $34,736, while the commission seats are four-year terms at $28,225.60 annually.
To submit a question to the chamber’s planning committee in advance of the forum, please do so at [email protected].
The forum is free and open to the public and will be televised, live to tape, on Coral Gables TV.
The chamber thanks the University of Miami and Becker & Poliakoff for sponsoring the forum. Additional sponsorship opportunities remain available. For more information, call Events Director Erica Dominguez at 305-446-1657.
