Hundreds join St. Thomas Episcopal’s Alumni Run, raise $35k
St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School’s second annual Alumni 5k Run drew 745 participants and raised over $35,000. Overall winners in the Feb. 2 run were Ashley Cusack (female) and William Field (male). Alumni, family, friends, running/walking enthusiasts, and those who liked to support a great cause, all ventured out and had a wonderful time.
The idea of the race was generated by Annie Valls and Alex McDowell, two alumni from St. Thomas, now juniors at Ransom Everglades High School. Their goal was to get alumni back to the St. Thomas campus.
They believed that it would be nice if the race also benefited a cause beyond St. Thomas and chose Breakthrough Miami, an academic enrichment program which supports and mentors students in underserved communities in Miami-Dade.
A committee of St. Thomas alumni, from middle schools and high schools around Miami, helped to promote the race among all of their classmates. The race followed a scenic route through neighborhoods surrounding St. Thomas Parish, 5692 North Kendall Dr., and refreshments were provided by many sponsors.
The alumni committee is already gearing up for next year’s event to be held on Feb. 1, 2014. Click here for complete results from the 2013 event.
