Radio Lollipop, a 33-year-old charity based in the United Kingdom, has 28 fully operational radio stations in four countries, including the U.S.A.

Miami Children’s Hospital, 3100 SW 62nd Ave., opened the first U.S. station in 1996 and celebrated Radio Lollipop’s “Sweet 16″ birthday in August 2012. Patients are provided with care, comfort, play and entertainment three nights a week by specially trained, enthusiastic volunteers who love what they do.

“We are fortunate to have this amazing group in our local children’s hospital,” said Donna Huck, chairman of Radio Lollipop USA and director of Radio Lollipop International.

Radio Lollipop recently received a $1,500 gift from former Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick and his wife Jeannett toward Radio Lollipop’s fundraising goal of $80,000 to modernize and revamp the station. Each station must raise its own funds for programming, operations and materials.

Joining the Slesnicks in the Dec. 20 check presentation were Ms. Huck; Lucy Morillo-Agnetti, president, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation; Pietro Bonacossa, director of foundation relations and development; and Patricia Tepedino, volunteer coordinator, Radio Lollipop.
