Temple Beth Am Day School fourth-graders continued their educational experience with the Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club community vegetable garden, when 33 children recently visited.

This year’s special feature was a visit with WSVN chief meteorologist Phil Ferro, who joined the group to teach “South Florida Weather 101.”

Vicky Koller’s Beth Am fourth-graders helped start the Deering Bay garden in 2010 and in the process have learned many lessons about plants, science and healthy eating.

During their bi-annual visits they assist with planting and harvesting and during this trip sampled some of the garden’s edible flowers.

While getting hands-on experience learning about seed propagation, butterfly gardening and vegetable planting, the students also enjoy outdoor science lessons on insects, pollination, ecology and conservation.

The Deering Bay Wildlife Checklist and nature walk introduces them to some of the beautiful indigenous wildlife at Deering Bay.

At Deering Bay, the program is under the direction of club manager Karen Harmon, club member Ethan Shapiro, and club chef Tim Rowan, a QCS certified organic farmer.
