Members of the South Florida Council of Fire Fighters, including Coral Gables Fire Rescue personnel, recently joined the Marlins Community Foundation “Marlins Ayudan” and Marlins’ employees during their day of civic engagement and philanthropy.

At the end of the day firefighters, Marlins and Voices for Children employees helped 40 foster children with their holiday wish lists — but they weren’t the typical requests for toys.

The lists included kitchenware, bed linens and other household items, as these young adults were transitioning out of the foster care program. In essence they have not been adopted and are now too old to remain in the program. They are now faced with starting a life on their own with no family and nowhere to go.

The Community Day of Action, falling on Dec. 7, included a wreath-laying ceremony at the World War II Memorial at Bayfront Park honoring veterans for their service and sacrifice. The ceremony included a combined honor guard from several fire departments along with various fire engines and rescue vehicles.
