The Coral Gables Senior High Girls Varsity Soccer Team punctuated a successful season Thursday, Dec. 20, with a 6-0 shutout victory over Braddock High at the Braddock field in West Miami-Dade.

The win raised the Lady Cavs’ record to 13-4 as the regular season came to an end. After the holiday break, Gables will advance to the Greater Miami Athletic Conference championships, and then the Girls 5A District 15 playoffs.

Gables’ leading scorer, sophomore forward Nelly Sagarra, came off the bench Thursday after being ill this week to score a hat trick (three goals) for the Lady Cavs. It was the fourth game of the season in which she has scored three or more goals. Junior Danielle Riesco scored one goal and had two assists, and junior Kelly Rendon added a goal. Gables’ sixth goal was an auto-goal that bounced off a Braddock player. Sophomore goalie Sophia Toche and freshman goalie Isabella Izquierdo recorded the shutout.

“I was happy, very happy with the performance,” said Coach Eddie Aguirre. “We covered well from the back and were moving the ball. We’ve had a lot of shutouts this year. All we have to do now is take it to the next level.”

Earlier in the week, the team honored its four graduating senior players at the final home game of the season. In pre- and post-game ceremonies, defenders Alexandra “Chachi” Riesco and Taylor Baez, goalie Maria Gutierrez and forward/midfielder Nicole “Nikki” Kaufman received balloons, flowers and other gifts and recognition for their contributions to the team.

Aguirre said the team’s crucial game will come in the district playoffs, where the Lady Cavs will meet Ferguson for the third time this year. Gables fell 0-1 and 1-4 to Ferguson in regular season games.

“We need to beat Ferguson,” he said. “I think that’s our biggest challenge now.”
