Two leaders of the Fairchild Challenge team at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables traveled recently to Les Cayes, Haiti, to present the Fairchild Challenge and its curriculum.

In collaboration with the American University and the National Botanical Garden in Les Cayes, the training was attended by teachers and undergraduate students. It was led by Marion Litzinger, program manager, and Barbara Martinez, satellite partner coordinator, of the Fairchild Challenge.

The training focused on how to provide environmental education to students and teachers, using the multidisciplinary environmental education program of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden as an essential tool.

Despite the devastation and flooding soon after Hurricane Sandy, more than 60 students and teachers attended the Oct. 27-28 training.

Two of the most important issues discussed by the students addressed deforestation and absence of waste management in Haiti.
