Coral Gables plans to add landscaping, trees and an irrigation system to the medians of LeJeune Road from Altara Avenue to Mendoza Avenue.

The project, approved in a 3-2 commission vote Tuesday, will cost $305,635 and is expected to take about four to five months to complete. The money to pay for the project will be transferred from the city’s general fund reserve.

Commissioners Ralph Cabrera and Maria Anderson voted against the project. Though both said they recognized that the improvements are valid, they expressed concerns with how the item was presented to the commission.

“I can’t support this item because it lacks a true public process,” Cabrera said. “I have a problem with moving money from general reserves to do a project like this. Why this wasn’t in the budget process is beyond me.”
