The Coral Gables Commission voted unanimously to adopt a domestic partner ordinance for its employees, providing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees the same benefits as their straight counterparts.

At the Tuesday (Oct. 30) meeting, Commissioner Ralph Cabrera opined that the move toward accepting the ordinance took too long, “however we have finally done the right thing for our employees,” he said.

CJ Ortuño, SAVE Dade’s executive director, applauded the commission’s vote.

“The Coral Gables City Commission took a bold step today for equality, acknowledging that equal benefits for equal work is a core value in our community. Coral Gables workers can now feel safe that their public officials will stand with them,” he said in a statement.
