The Ponce Society of Young Professionals has teamed up with Coral Gables Senior High for a “Dress Shirt & Tie Drive” happy hour to benefit Cavalier football players on Thursday, Aug. 16, 6-8 p.m., at Cibo Wine Bar, 45 Miracle Mile.

Event organizers ask participants to bring a dress shirt – up to size 3XL, new or in good conditionand / or a tie to help Gables High football players continue their tradition of dressing up at school on game days.

“Any opportunity to bring distinction and honor through our football is wonderful,” said Gables High Principal Adolfo L. Costa.  “We’ve had a drought for the past few years but we’re looking to get back to that success.”

The Cavaliers have been crowned national high school football champions four times; Principal Costa hopes the players’ professional attire on game days will help inspire winning ways.

The idea to wear business attire on game days, as opposed to football jerseys, originated with the team’s coach, Roger Pollard. A Miami native and Gables High graduate himself, Coach Pollard wanted to bring professionalism to the field.

“I’ve been trying to get these kids to walk around and look more presentable, like business people, leaders of America,” said Pollard. “It takes a community to raise a football team. We want to try and get everyone to help out by showing up.”

Admission is $10 and includes a complimentary drink ticket and delicious appetizers. All of the proceeds will go to the football team.

The Ponce Society of Young Professionals is a newly formed committee of the Coral Gables Community Foundation. The group supports the foundation’s mission of enhancing the quality of life for people who live or work in Coral Gables and recruits young professionals to get involved in the 20-year-old foundation.
