Coral Gables agrees to last-minute change on pickup referendum
Coral Gables commissioners agreed to a last-minute language change to the city’s November referendum on whether to allow the parking of pickup trucks overnight on residential streets and driveways.
Commissioners eliminated language that would have legalized pickup trucks in residential driveways only if the bed had a particular type of cover, which critics said was potentially expensive.
Commissioner Maria Anderson proposed the change in response to complaints that the earlier language, approved in a 3-2 vote earlier this month, was confusing and would place unreasonable financial burdens on pickup-truck owners. Several residents, even those who own pickup trucks and would favor scrapping the old law, which dates back more than 50 years, threatened to abstain from voting because of the prohibitions, Anderson said.
