The Gables Good Government Committee recently hosted a reception at the home of Fausto and Alina Gomez to welcome its new officers and to present Outstanding Service Awards.

Gus Barrera (2005-2008 chairman of the Miami-Dade County School Board) and Dr. Larry Feldman (2010-2012 vice chairman of the Miami-Dade County School Board) received the awards in recognition of their effective leadership.

The awards also demonstrated the community’s appreciation of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s and the School Board’s adherence to the educational compact signed with the city about six years ago.

Because of that agreement, Coral Gables now enjoys important enhancements to public school opportunities for local students, such as a new international high school, a new pre-K through eighth-grade preparatory academy, a new classroom wing at Coral Gables High School, a rehabilitated historic administrative building and a new classroom building at Ponce Middle School.

New Gables Good Government President Jeannett Slesnick also introduced her executive board: President-elect Debbie Swain, Immediate Past President Jorge Alvarez, Vice Presidents Enrique Lopez and Evelyn Budde, Treasurer Richard DeWitt, and Secretary Gay Bondurant.
